Sericho
A brief description:
Type: stony-iron meteorite, pallasite
Meteorite impact site: Kenya, Eastern Province
The time of the meteorite fall: not fixed
Date of discovery: 2016
History of study
The first information that fragments of a large meteorite are located near the village of Habaswein in Eastern Kenya appeared in 2016. Local residents have been aware about large boulders of an unusual appearance for several
generations. In 2017, a collector Michael Farmer purchased a 107 kg fragment, prompting the villagers to collect over a ton of other meteorite fragments for subsequent sale. The meteorite got its name from the village closest to the place of the first findings - Sericho.
General information
Typologically, Sericho belongs to pallasites group, with an even balance of metal and olivine grains. The color of olivine grains varies from yellow-green to orange, the size is 0.5 - 1 cm. In the chemical composition, olivine occupies up to 70% of the mass of the meteorite, the rest is iron, nickel, cobalt and phosphorus. Most of the found specimens are large stones covered with melting bark, in some cases reaching 50 kg. On some of them regmaglipts are noticeable. The total weight of the found fragments is about 2800 kg.
