Description
Protolindenia wittei are ancient dragonflies that hunted flying insects at the time when the footsteps of the dinosaurs were shaking the earth. Their habitat was a tropical archipelago in the seas that covered the territory of future Germany. Like their modern descendants, Protolindenia wittei lived along the shores of water bodies. Sometimes the wind carried the dragonflies toward the salty, lifeless lagoons, and they died on the wet sand. The tide would sweep their remains with a layer of calcareous silt, reliably preserving the smallest details. The fragile wings and slender long bodies have fossilized, and now you can admire the beauty of these insects after 150 million years.
