Description
Knightia fish are a trademark of the Green River Formation in Wyoming, USA. These small freshwater fish of the herring family occur in large numbers in limestone sediments on the site of former lakes. It is not uncommon to see entire clusters of skeletons formed as a result of the water reservoirs' drying out.
Thanks to the unique conditions they are preserved in perfect state. Every bone of these fish can be examined, and after all, they are more than 40 million years old! Back then, during the Eocene epoch, Knightia were an important component of freshwater ecosystems. Predatory fish, rays, crocodiles and birds depended on their abundance. Today, tiles with fish of the genus Knightia decorate interiors and become part of paleontological collections all over the world.
