Description
These rib fragments belong to an ichthyosaur from the genus Stenopterygius, a small dolphin-like lizard.
In the Jurassic, the seas of our planet were home not only to fish, but also to large reptiles such as ichthyosaurs. Like dolphins, they were perfectly adapted to the aquatic environment. Elongated, fish-shaped bodies, a tail similar to that of a shark, and livebirth - in fact, ichthyosaurs never made it on land.
Most ichthyosaurs were 2 - 4 meters long, but some reached the size of a whale.
Clay deposits in the famous Holtzmaden and nearby areas preserve perfectly preserved skeletons and skeletal fragments of these magnificent animals.
