Description
Carinoceras is a genus of Upper Devonian goniatites with a shell considerably flattened on the sides. This shape is characteristic of actively floating mollusks inhabiting the open sea. Goniatites are known as the oldest group of ammonites. Their shells are arranged simpler than those of more advanced congeners, in particular, they have wavy or zigzag lobed line.
Most goniates are inhabitants of shallow coastal seas. Fast swimmers, like representatives of the genus Carinoceras, are relatively rare among goniatites.
